Countdown to Christmas Day 12

Today I had to nanny in the morning.  I was expecting to have this whole week off, but I ended up working all week long – but I didn't mind.  The kids were so excited for Christmas and we tried to fill our time with Christmas crafts and other fun things that we normally wouldn't do (like watching a movie or going to a biscuit party!).  Today as I was leaving the dad handed me a large bunch of beautiful red, green, and white flowers along with a very touching Christmas card signed by all of them and a bit of a bonus.

I started looking after these kids about 4 years ago.  I love them as much as I love my own nieces and nephews and I couldn't have better parents to work with. This arrangement kind of (luckily) fell into my lap those years ago and I am so grateful for it.

Working Holiday or Holiday Working?

I know this post is long overdue.  There is so much to write about and so many pictures (oh SO many pictures), I fear, you might be bored by the end of the post.  Oh well, if you find your mind wandering off or your eyes closing while reading – just close the page – I wont be offended.
On the 28th of June I got a phone call from a family who had gotten my name from an agency I was signed up to do temporary work with.  The Mum said they were going on holiday and was wondering if I was free for the week.  She wasn't sure what day she was leaving or where they were going.  I told her I would call her back.  The next day I got a phone call that said they would be going to an island off the coast of Spain and could I come?  She offered me more money that I had suggested and I said, (without thinking), YES!  She told me we would be leaving the next day (Wed) and that their PA would get in touch with me with all the details.
As I calmed down from the initial excitement I realized that I didn't know how old the child was, what the parents were like, or any other details.  I was taking a big chance – and as the time got closer and closer I got more and more nervous.
Wednesday I left here about 7:30 in the morning to get to the airport in London.  3 trains and 1 tube later I arrived in once piece (but was still VERY nervous).  I got a call at the airport saying the family was there and where to meet them.
I was put at ease right away when I met them.  They were a young, fun couple with the cutest baby ever (20 months old).  They told me, as I waited, that the Villa we would be staying at was in Mallorca, Spain and that we’d have a personal chef while we were there.  I started to realize that this wouldn't be a “normal” holiday.
We were met at the airport by one of the staff that had a small cooler filled with chilled water, fruit, and fruit bars.  We followed her to the Villa.  I was struck by the beautiful mountains on the island – I don't know what I expected, but not mountains.  It was absolutely stunning – and absolutely HOT.

As we pulled up to the Villa, “D” our chef, and “T” our house manager were waiting outside the front door to greet us.  They brought my bags in and showed me up to my room – asking if it was “acceptable” – uhhhhh yeah?!?!?!
DSCF4894Here is the bathrobe and slippers that were in my closet. DSCF4895Here is my bed (MASSIVE) and very comfortable.  The room was air conditioned and very big. DSCF4897This was the view from my window.  The two palm trees.DSCF4898The first night I came up to bed to read my book and found that the cleaners had stuck bookmarks in all of my books – just an added touch.
I forgot most of the trip that I was actually working.  The baby’s bedroom was right next to mine and I had a baby monitor.  I was to get up with him in the mornings (around 7), feed him breakfast, play with him, keep him out of the sun from 11 – 4, feed him lunch, put him down for a nap, play with him some more,  feed him dinner (I didn't have to prepare the meals – the chef did that), play with him, bathe him, and put him to bed.  He was by far one of the most pleasant children I have ever watched and had such a cute personality – even on the day he woke me up at 5:30 – he was a joy.  The worst thing that I had to deal with was the weather.  His parents were so involved that they were always around to play with him, swim with him, or help with meals.
Here are some of the views:

Here are some pictures from the rest of the Villa;
DSCF4909The Master Bedroom – it also had a HUGE walk in closet and huge bathroom. DSCF4911Inside dining table (always with a bowl full of fresh fruit), we didn't use it at all – we always ate outside. DSCF4912 The Kitchen where “D” worked her magic.  I didn't spend much time in here at all (it was so nice!)DSCF4913The table where we had all of our meals. DSCF4914The sitting room – we didn't spend much time here either. DSCF4918The beds outside on the patio. DSCF4919The couches outside were we’d sit and chat and eat.
One of the best parts of the house was a “Kids Room” where there were toys, TV, arts and crafts, and books.  It was such a good thing to have (I don't know what I would have done without it).  I later found out that a nanny is included in the price of the Villa – but she didn't live-in so she wouldn't be there in the mornings with the baby.
DSCF4915 DSCF4916DSCF4917
Every morning when it was just me and the baby, we’d walk up and down the long drive (taking advantage of the lower temperatures).  Here are some pictures of the grounds:
DSCF4920The pool (obviously). DSCF4921 DSCF4926 DSCF4928 So much land to walk and play on.  The grass was horrible though, really coarse and hard to walk on – didn't seem to bother the baby though.DSCF4937The baby walking up to the gate. DSCF4942   Another perspective.
So, most of the time we were at the Villa, and I must admit I did get a little stir crazy.  I was really excited we we decided to go to the port for the day.  Since “D” was off on the weekends, we went out and had lunch and walked around the port.  The parents took the baby with them and I got to walk around for a bit on my own (trying not to die of heat stroke!).  It was really nice to get out and to see the sights.  Here are some pictures from the port:
DSCF4905 DSCF4906 DSCF4972
One day the mum and I took the baby to the beach.  It was a drive straight up a mountain and down the other side to get to a beautiful beach.  It was so nice.  She played with the baby in the water and I sat on the beach (in the shade).  We left before it got too hot or too busy.
DSCF4955 DSCF4956 DSCF4957
On the ride home from the beach, we stopped at a look out point and this is what I saw:
DSCF4962 DSCF4964 DSCF4965Stunning…. just stunning.
One night the mum and I decided, after dinner, to go shopping in the town.  It was so nice to go out, just us girls, and shop, talk, and just experience the town.
DSCF4947 DSCF4948
After the first few days, the rest of them just flew by.  After I put the baby to sleep – The parents and I would have amazing food.  The chef was so professional and even the dad said that it was the best food he’s ever had – and that is saying something because he’s traveled the world.  I tried things like: steak, caviar, quails eggs, hummus, white chocolate and asparagus soup, prosciutto, and so many others.  It was the best (poshist – is that a word?!?!?) food I am sure I will ever taste.  We had great conversations at dinner and I really got to like the parents as friends as well as really good employers.
It was finally time to go home.  We stopped at the aquarium and I was mostly interested in the jellyfish (I have TONS of pictures of that).
DSCF4985 DSCF4987
We got to the airport and just relaxed until we got the plane.  It was super hot (STILL) and when we got on the plane they had the air on so strong that this is what we were greeted with:
DSCF4994It looked like smoke – a sight like that is bound to make anyone a bit nervous.  It turns out the flight was fine, just 2 1/2 hours.  At immigration we parted ways (they had another flight to catch and I had to stand in line FOREVER).
I got on the train home and was promptly kicked out of the first class coach (I didn't know it was First Class) and after a week of First Class treatment – real life came crashing back down.  Chris was nice and met me at the train station in London and rode back home with me.
It was such a good experience.  It could have turned out so bad, but it turned out amazing.  I hope that I am able to help them again.

Just Jumping On...

Hello Internet I am struggling with that to write so, I am going to copy MANY other people talking about what jobs they've had and jump on that bandwagon...
Kids of Camelot: This was my first job and I was really lucky to get it.  I only go it because I knew someone who worked there.  I started out working every afternoon with my very own group of 2 year olds.  I loved planning the lessons and watching them learn.  I worked there for a year.  After that year I had worked with all the other age groups and did summer camp.  I only quit because I had quite a lot of commitments with Madrigals.
Children's Garden:  I really enjoyed this job - for the most part - I started out working with the babies and within 2 months of getting hired I was promoted to Assistant Director.  I really enjoyed that because I got to be in charge - except the whole nasty business of firing people.  I got to show parents around the day care and put together a lovely Christmas program.  I got this job straight out of high school.  I left quite suddenly with a turn of events.  I was sad to go.  One of the best things about that job was that one day when I had just started my 6th grade teacher came in and it turns out I was watching her son.  I also loved that once I left quite a few parents took their kids out and within a few months the daycare closed.
Salt Lake Orthopaedic Centre:  I HATED this job.  I had a huge problem with the boss and I only stayed a few weeks.   Horrible!  I cant remember much about... I think I've blocked it out.
Lane Bryant:  I worked here one summer before I left for college.  I hated the job -- too much folding... but LOVED the discount.
Sear's Nanny:  This has been the very best job, and one of the best things to happen to me in my life.  I worked for an amazing family in Farmington, UT and several years later in Hershey, PA.  It was a very difficult job, at times - but the rewards of it were worth it.  When I started there were four kids - Bradford 8, Joseph 6, Abigail 4, Spencer 18 months... then baby Andrew who was born after I started.  I grew to love those kids more than I ever thought.  Now the kids are (this year) turning - 15, 13, 11, 9, and 7!  I love them like my own family and miss them tons!!!
Department of Workforce Services:   I was an accountant - I think that the title was the most shocking thing about the job. Crappy job... GREAT co-workers.  This is the longest job I have ever had.  Lots of drama, but I met some of the best people ever at this job.  I look back with very fond memories.
Buttercup Day Nursery:  This has been my first job here in England and I can honestly say - MOST days I really love my job.  I like the people I work with a lot.  I work in the baby room so most of the time I get to cuddle babies all day -- it is great.
There you go... hope that wasn't too boring... but I might jump on this "tell all" theme more often.

A Call to Repentance....

Daily I think..... Jamie, you should update your blog....

Daily I push that thought aside telling myself - It doesn't matter, no one reads it.

Daily I get reminded from good friends... that it does get read - so this is for you, with a promise of doing better.

This is officially my first entry as the new Mrs. Flattley.  I am getting used to using that as my last name - but it still throws me a little when people use the word "wife" to describe me.  There we definatly times that I thought I would never be anyone's wife and now it seems surreal that I am.... but, I'm sure I'll get used to that.

Married life is good.  We spent our honeymoon in Ocean City, MD and it was beautiful!  I got pulled over by the Maryland state police on the way there because I only had one working headlight.... needless to say Chris found it very entertaining.  We spent most of our time in our cute hotel - which was more like a nice condo with a great view of the bay, kitchen, living room, dining area, and bedroom.  We ended up staying for 4 nights and it was really nice.

As we made our way back to Hershey, Pennsylvania - we got the call that the room in the basement of the house I nanny for - that was supposed to be done - wasnt and so unless we wanted to kick one of the kids out of their room (no thank you -- newlyweds remember...) I would have to pay for a hotel.  I am nowhere near rich so we settled at the "Cocoa Motel" a.k.a. The Palace (it made me feel better to call it that).  Let me try to explain how it was -- you know the smell you smell when you walk into an old person's house, or maybe the smell you smell when you walk into a very poorly run nursing home?  That is what it was like... with soap, towels and shampoo stolen from various "nicer" hotels, wood paneled walls, awful carpeting, paper thin walls, and a bed that you could use as dry wall.  It was rough going for those few weeks imagine, being a ROOM with the same person for days on end and then having them at work with you too.  I love him, but it was hard for both of us.

We are now in the basement, it isnt finished we are using a shower curtain with duct tape, a carpet remnant for flooring (not one that even beings to fit either) and the constant sound of the foot steps of 7 other people upstairs.

As for the job..... I love the kids but HATE the situation.  After some really tough times with the bosses, Chris and I have decided to come back to Utah in a little over a week.  Where we'll live, how we'll live, or what we'll do it still anyones guess.... but being unemployed and homeless beats this any day.

And how am I doing?  After a month of marriage I can say I am doing very well.  I love being married, I love WHO I married and I wouldnt change those things for anything....  Our life together has never been "normal" or easy, and I hope that one day we can get used to that, but for right now we just keep going....

10 Minutes of Peace

Today was a bad day at work.... running errands, grocery shopping, loads of laundry, dinner and general care of 5 children and one adult, but there was a small light at the end of the day.

As I lay there on the big bed with one child cuddling near me, her sobs subsiding just because, for that moment, she really felt like someone cared and someone was going to stick around.  Another child laying on the other side of me curled up in a ball - finally, CALMLY breathing and taking a minute to realize, that no matter how mean the kids are at school here in PA, the best parts of Utah are in the same house as he is, and the youngest laying next to his sister and on my arm, cuddling with her to make her feel better - I realized at that minute of calm and overwhelming family love that I needed that moment - just as badly as they did - maybe more so.

And it was that one thing, that small time, that made this day one of the best I've had.

It Keeps Going and going and going and going and going....

I know it has been FOREVER since I've updated my page... so here you go, for the few of my faithful readers...

I am doing alright here in PA.  A scale of 1-10? Most of the time a 4.  I called and spoke to my dad and he said, "How are you doing"  I said "alright, I've come to realize that on my best days - I'm alright, and you dont even want to know what I am on my worst days."

Am I sounding negative?  Sorry....  but I am.

This is NOT how I thought things would be.  I am still in the Fab Econo-Lodge.  I have come to realize that I get a good 10 minutes of heat out of the heater, have to run the bath water for at least 5 minutes so the brown water can run out and I can bathe in "clean" water, have to hold down the flusher on the toilet, and I dont think that they have vacuumed my room since I "moved in".  But it is my solitude - and when the Econo-Lodge is your sanity - that tells you something.

The other day at work I spent 2 hours sorting out my nanny mom's scrapbook by 16 different themes and 8 different colors -- themes alphabetized, colors in order from light to dark.  Where is the nannying work there?  Yeah, I dont know either!

I have children constantly either loving me more than anything or hating me more than anything.  Everyone assures me that "that is what kids do", and I can appreciate that, I really can... but it gets tiresome getting told on a daily basis either "I hate you!" or "My mom is nicer than you!"

I am trying to tough and stick it out - and I will.  I have a friend coming for a trip this month, another friend's trip next and also MY WEDDING!

But at the risk of sounding pathetic - I miss my friends - I had a little mini-break down the other night when I was watching Sex and the City and in the last episode when Carrie comes back from Paris and has brunch with her friends.... made me miss mine more than I ever thought I would.  I miss my family and there is little that doesnt remind me of them... and I miss the mountains, mini-corn dogs, fry-sauce, chili's, swings at the park with Kim, sing-a-longs in the car -- driving around with someone in my car other than children for that matter.  And I miss Chris... this wedding cant come fast enough... and if we make it through these next 6 months - I'm throwing a PARTY!

I do love the kids... their hugs, smiles, laughs and spirits help me more than I like to admit.

I am ready for my winter to be over and am waiting for spring.

A Fever...

Said at the dinner table....

The little girl to her brothers - I have a fever... so does Jamie.

The oldest boy (12 years old) -- I have a fever too!

Jamie -- You do not - do you?

Him -- Yeah, a fever 'cause I'm so HOT!

Out of the mouth of Babes....

Today while me and the kids were watching Little Rascals.... we came upon a scene where the little boy - Alfalfa and the little girl - Darla kissed.  This is what was said among the children...

All the boys first booooooed.....

Then the only girl said to me....

"Jamie, do you think they really kissed or was it special effects??"

"Ab, they really kissed, they are actors."

"You mean those kids would kiss??!?!  Do you think they got paid to do it?"

"Yep, of course... probably lots of money to be in the movie."

"Yeah, they'd have to pay me A LOT to do something like that... like $50.00!!"

I think she'll be changing her tune in a few years....

Kids....

I swear to you, dear internet, I will NEVER have more than 4 kids.... and even 4 might be a little excessive.... I swear to you, dear internet, I will never have kids... well.... maybe only one.

Doing this mom thing is a hard job, I seem to have forgotten.  I love the kids but - ITS HARD!  Today for example:

7:00 Get to work

2:00 1st child gets home (early out day - curse those school administrations for wanting to give the teachers a break!)

2:30 next 3 children get home

3:00 last child gets home

3:00-4:00 friends over -- "mom said!"

4:00 Church Activity

4:15 Scouts

4:15-5:00 Dinner - prep and eat

I'm tired just from reading it.....  So I say again... no children... watching them - all 5 - is great birth control....

Livin' it up in PA (or my BLOG with a mention of Chris)

Hello Blog people!

I am here in PA - FINALLY!  The road was long, but I am here and somewhat in a sound mind.  Things are hard but, things are right too.

The kids are great... same as I remember.... crazy as I remember.

The hotel I am staying in is CRAP - but - oh well.... right (keep telling me that).

The wedding plans are coming along nicely... and he still wants to marry me... even if I do cry to him a lot... he says that is in the "Good Husband Handbook".  I say good -- I've held in the tears for 25 years -- FINALLY someone I've roped into sticking around while I let my emotions actually show!!!

And lastly.... Chris (the aformentioned above - lest you get confused), my beloved (my mom will get that joke) is amazing... he's the one above who listens to me cry -- stop reading now if you dont want to puke from the sappiness of the next few sentances....

Chris is amazing.  He called me EVERY day while I was on the road (did I mention it was LONG -- how do people live in Nebraska????) most of the time he called 2 or 3 times to see that I was okay and to talk.  Sunday, when I took my mom and sister to the airport -- he called at the very minute I was going to pull off the road and call him.... and he said several time -- just cry jamie... you let it all out.  Which is something I am not used to hearing... but am growing to love.  I never imagined I could love someone the way I love him.... I am a lucky girl....

So there you go.... my life in a nutshell... all-be-it a sappy one ;)  Life is alright... I love my nanny family, I LOVE my amazing family back home -- who I miss more than I'd ever admit - and I love Chris (this blogs for you).

DUDE, ROAD TRIP!!!!

So I am sitting here at my parents house (I cant bring myself to call it home, which means I dont have one - I'm officially homeless!) waiting to leave on my LONG road trip to Pennsylvania, where, I will become a mother and wife (minus the sex stuff ) in mere days!  I moved out of my apartment on Saturday and have been sleeping here at my parents since Thursday.  After a tiring night of scrapbooking - 12:30 AM (thank you very much) - I must admit driving sounds lovely... but maybe that is because today we are only going to do 4 hours -- tomorrow starts the real journey of 9 hours a day - stopping every 3 to get out and make the feeling return to our numb butts and swollen legs... sounds like fun right?  Well at least I dont have THAT much to complain about -- Karissa is the one who has to sit in the back with a seat of room -- the rest is crammed full of stuff to take to PA.  You'd think I'd be sad to leave Utah -- and I am sad to leave my friends and amazing family - but I am excited -- this means I can start the count down to marriage and whole new life!  Now THAT is exciting.  I'll try to write as much as I can while I am gone.... if not I'll write you all when I get to PA!  Thank you to everyone who's helped me and made the effort to see me!  I'll miss you all!!!!!

Its official....

Yesterday I decided to tell my cute nanny family that I am moving to PA to help them for sure.  I dont know when I leave yet, but it will be soon... within weeks...  I was okay with the decision, until I actually talked to the family and realized what a HUGE job this is going to be - 5 kids and me in charge of all of them - all of the time... ALL of the time...  it just compacted my bad day...  Here is a list of things that made my day bad...

1.   WORKING FOR THE DISHONEST, UNDERHANDED, THOUGHTLESS, THEIFS - I call them my bosses, you call them the Government... I had no idea just how corrupt the government is - now I do and it is worse than anyone thinks...

2.  I went to do piano lessons and finished in 5 minutes with 25 more to fill because she didnt practice... LISTEN to your mother -- practice your piano!

3.  I thought maybe to calm me down I would drive through the canyon -- I got up there and all the leaves had fallen off the tree and, apparently - were no longer as beautiful as they were 2 days ago...

4.  I drove on the skinny road and freaked myself out because there wasnt room for 2 cars so as soon as I got about 2 minutes into the canyon I turned around. I had freaked myself out about falling down the cliff because of the small road...

5.  I decided to try another canyon and got high enough up in the Bountiful mountains to see the entire Davis County... but still no leaves...

6.  I decided to just look at all the HUGE houses and got myself carsick doing that -- I guess there is a first for everything - my friends will understand - its now official I cant even drive and not get carsick.

7.  I hate the stupid Baseball playoffs -- ruin my FOX program viewing...

8. And then the whole announcement -- come November I'll be a mother of 5 - not a nanny a mother...

And poor Chris and Kim get the brunt of it... let me say publicly... sorry I'm horrible sometimes...
